Bird with Fish

This is a wild pelican hanging out near the Seal/Sea Lion area at SeaWorld. The pelicans were waiting for people to throw fish to the seals and miss (which is exactly how this one got lunch).

Street Art Stickers

Here is a more obvious example of street artists in Philly using Priority Mail stickers to create their picture and then stick it quickly. I have seen Markese's work throughout Philly in that same marker character and Ant in the bottom right.

Street Art: Trash Compressor

The simplicity of this street art in Philadelphia is what makes it so remarkable. Just three dots, two inverted v's and six lines can completely change the personality of the image. This is on a solar powered trash compressor a couple blocks outside of Chinatown

Bulletin Board

Every university has these - large round bulletin boards at various place throughout campus that people can stable flyers to. This is a section of one such bulletin board at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The thousands of staples piled up on each other from decades of flyers is a visual representation of the rich history that these universities possess. You will also be in desperate need of a tetanus shot if you cut yourself on any of the thousands of rusty staples on this board.

Campy Cranks

While much of the population adorns their walls with crucifixes, mine is adorned with a vintage Campagnolo crank taken out of my Dad's (awesome) box of old bike parts. I used Lightroom to make the photo black and white and high contrast.

Street Art: Elephant

Most of the street art in Philadelphia isn't done with spray paint, but drawn on U.S. Postal Service stickers (If you look closely at the elephant you can see "Priority Mail" printed on it). This allows the artists to create the picture with ample time and then post it quickly.

Power Plant

This is the power plant at the manatee viewing area in Florida. The manatees are drawn there in the winter because the power plant makes the water warm. The smokestacks make it look stereotypically anti-environmental, however it has made strides to protect the manatees. I found the meeting of environment and industry very interesting.

Mini Plug

The speakers and ear cups always seem to get all the glory on a pair of headphones. Presumably this is because people have the most direct relationship with the speakers and ear cups on a pair of headphones. That being said, in many ways, the plug (in this case a stereo mini plug) is the most structurally elegant piece on the headphones. The mix of function and beauty (granted, beauty is almost certainly not the reason this piece was engineered to look this way) is incredibly striking.

Bank Shot

I always find it interesting how much emphasis and glamour is attributed to money. For many people, piggy banks (or in this case a hippopotamus bank) forms one of their first real relationships with money so I thought it would be fun to give this bank a little extra allure.

By the way, this is the back of the bank. The front has a normal hippo face.

VELO

This shot was from East Village, New York City. It was scratched into the pavement on a sidewalk. Velo is the french work for bicycle, but is regularly used by Americans for publications and stores pertaining to bicycles. My (and my dad's) love for bikes meant that we stood there for about ten minutes trying to get good shot and people walking by looked at us like we were crazy.

First Post/ Blue Bird

My first post may require some explanation. I'm a recreational "photographer" (I'm using the title photographer loosely. I'm actually more like a guy who points a camera at something, hits the button and prays for a decent result.) That being said, I really enjoy photography so I wanted to share some pictures I've taken and get some tips and (constructive) critiques.

This picture was taken in Apollo Beach, Florida at the Manatee Viewing Area. The manatees were interesting but tend to stay underwater so it is difficult to get a good shot. This bird, however was walking around looking for lunch but was willing to pose for a shot or two.

As an added bonus, today there is a second image. You know things are getting bad when you need to put up a sign instructing people not to molest the manatees.
